New Year

New year, new you?  What was wrong with the old you? Think about it. We always seem to want to start with a new clean slate but sometimes we have a good template. It is time we give ourselves credit for who we are and what we have accomplished. Rather than looking at areas you need to fix, see where you are really making some forward strides. Often times I find the areas I need to work are easier to change when I give myself credit for doing things right.

So look at what you have accomplished in the last year. It does not need to be something big. Little victories in life are good: getting a good review at work, completing a project, improving your golf score, beginning an exercise regimen.  Do not discount the things that did not happen because of steps you took. You did not add credit card debt this year, you did not miss work for sick time, you did not miss any of your child’s school presentations or sport events. Take a look at these things and the time and effort you put forth for whatever it was you wanted to accomplish. Celebrate your successes and use them to build a plan to have continued success.  

One other thing I often do is set the bar too high when I want to make a change.  Do not make the mistake of setting yourself up for failure. Very few of us can succeed when we go to make a big change all at once. Taking it in little steps helps to slowly build to the full change and you take time to celebrate each little victory. When we try to do too much at once we can end up beating ourselves up for our mistakes. So what small changes can you make today to make your life a little simpler, easier or healthier?
