Stay strong and healthy this St Patrick’s Day

There is so much confusion right now. The coronavirus is one of those stressors that tax our mind and body. Keeping priorities straight helps temper your body’s response to stress. Stress takes its toll on the immune system of the body.

So first you can just take a deep breath and acknowledge that we do have a problem. Even if you are not directly impacted yet, you can look at what you can do to protect yourself AND others. Inconveniences and disappointments will be forgotten. Take the precautions necessary and follow whatever restrictions recommended.

The things we are being asked to do – no unnecessary travel, social distancing and good hand washing are not really hard to do but have a mental impact. You DO have ways to guide your thoughts away from panic and fear. If you are not dealing with any illness right now take a moment to be grateful that you and your family are healthy. Take a few deep breaths, close your eyes if you like, and realistically think of how you are impacted RIGHT NOW.  If, for now, this is just a strange reality but you can do most of the things you need to do then you are alright. There is no need to think up problems. Take a moment to let that settle in. You are alright.

Anticipating financial and health concerns only make things worse. What you can do is plan, which is different from worry. Use your time to see what you can do to reduce the impact. What resources & contacts are available to you?

If you are concerned about getting ill, follow the precautions and let go of the stress. Instead see what you can do to build up your immune system by eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep. These are all things that are hard to do when you are stressed or afraid. Deep breaths, meditation and exercise all decrease your stress. Enjoying time with your loved ones, either at home or with facetime or on the computer, can bring your stress down. Reach out to neighbors and your community to see if you can support, help, or just connect with them.

We are all connected and the only way to get through all this is to work together and keep the stress to a minimum. Use this time to appreciate all you have and calmly prepare for what may be a challenging time coming.

I will be sharing different practices of meditation, breath practices, movements and yoga classes for free on my YouTube Page, website, Facebook and LinkedIn. These practices may give you a little break from the stresses of the days to come. You can’t really change the future but you can change your reaction to whatever comes. Stay safe and stay well.
